Level: Introductory. It is designed for people with little or no previous knowledge of
Japanese. It focuses on Katakana, one of the three Japanese writing systems, which is used mainly for onomatopoeia and foreign words.

Thank you for registering for the Introductory Lessons on Onomatopoeia in Manga at the Japan Foundation, Toronto. We received many more registrations than expected. To accommodate the large number of people who have expressed interest in these lessons, we are now offering the course twice so that you may choose which 2-day session you would like to attend.
As each 2-day session is designed to cover the material over 2 consecutive lessons, participation in the first lesson is required in order to attend the second lesson. Both 2-day sessions will cover the same material. The class size will be approximately 40-70 people.
We would also like to ask that you please consider the following guidelines before completing your registration.
These lessons are designed for participants who:
1) In principle, do not have any knowledge of Katakana.
2) Are high school students or older.
Please be advised that some of the pictures may contain scenes of mild violence that may be inappropriate for sensitive readers.

Brief Course Description:
The Japanese language is rich in onomatopoeia (words that attempt to recreate sounds, such as “vroom” or “meow”). The aim of this two-day lesson is to help learners be able to read those sound-effect words, commonly used in Japanese comic books, by referring to a katakana chart.
