Chapter #17: IDENTITY CRISIS (taken from PICK ME:Breaking into advertising and staying there, Pg. 127)

What did you want to be when you grew up? A very tiny percentage of little boys who said "a firefighter!" followed through on that once-intoxicating goal. In high school, graduating seniors who thought English literature or archeology or political science would be the path to happiness most often scrambled to switch majors later- when something resembling a true calling (or reality check) kicked in. If you've landed in advertising as one thing of another, it's not surprising to us anymore to see people wonder, with much wringing of hands, whether they're in the wrong gig. The realization dawns: "I like art direction so much, what am I doing being a writer? I'm the world's worst suit, but, damn, can I write!"

  You changed your mind countless times since you were five, and why would that necessarily stop just because you went to a lot of trouble to get a particular degree?

Whenever you find yourself unfulfilled and looking longingly at what the other guy is doing, it's legitimate and right to pause to consider how best to pursue what would make you happiest. It may seem like a mountain to climb in the moment, when you ponder the big pay cut, loss of seniority and security, and quite possibly going back to school.

It's not a stretch to conclude that running with your true strengths and interests can pay off big-time. There's no need to beat yourself up that you didn't hit on it earlier, and it's likely that without the "wrong" job(s) first, you wouldn't be staring at this moment of opportunity anyway.

Below is the Aussie version. I was watching a documentary on advertisments around the world or something along the lines. Even then, three or four years ago it took me atleast two hours to find it because I couldn't remember which insect or phone company it was. Well it must have been 2006 because I had just come back from Sydney so quite enjoyed the Australian accent and that is how I remember it. The other day .. actually day I started this blog I'd just watched this documentary called 'Art & Copy' (another one about the advent of "advertising") and been thinking about this Mayfly CF ever since (even though I had already forgotten it was a mayfly- all I could remember was Vodafone as that was my phone company in Australlia). Here we are.. enjoy the videos!!!!

The Truth About Managing Your Career- Dr. Karen Ozato *my little notes!

[Disclaimer: I'm rushing to place this entry for today as the clock is slowly ticking towards 12 o' clock and I'm sleepy and tired. I quite literally was at work from 8:30am to 9:30pm. Not to forget my one hour commute to and fro but the lesson her today takes me back to Pg. 202/ Chapter called "Moving Up Means Letting Go" in this book.]

So............. here we are at Pg. 202 and I feel a slap across my face by point #2 "Lose the Perfectionism". I have actually been told that often enough- 'Just let it be acceptable, you don't need it to be perfect!' and so here is my dilemma~ I have never invested my time and energy into any activity, relationship or commitment that I didn't believe required my absolute best. Apparently- my workaholism and my perfectionism are the root causes for why I'm single and have a completely boring life. So, I AM JUST THINKING...is my perfectionism costing me too much? ...........................

... but on second thoughts my perfectionism has allowed me to live a rich life where I've always gone to bed satisfied with how I spent my day, I have had no regrets about how I could have done something better and to work towards my goal of living a life I always imagined (getting married has never been a part of my plans anyways!!!). And a reference to me being single- it is better to not have a boyfriend than having one useless one ^__^ A co-worker who came to drop me off this evening told me, "people at work always ask me.. does yesha really love this work so much? She actually looks happy but she is so smart and deserves a job that is so much better". I love my job at this moment in time. I feel there are still somethings I'd like to improve before I move on. Officially I've set the date for October... or come October if nothing happens I might just have to 'lose the perfectionism', bite the bullet and take the plunge into a new career! Isn't that my plan anyways?

In page 200 & 201, Dr. Otazo says, "There are four principal ways to find satisfaction at work-

i) to get ahead (check! I received a promotion last week. I am adding new responsibilites to my resume)

ii) to get secure (check! full time hours, health benefits, steady pay cheque)

iii) to get free (check! when I am on duty I stop worrying about my future, what people say, my weight, my laundry that needs to be done..etc.)

iv) to get high (check! when I'm in my work environment I get addicted to all the tasks that I want to get done in that day alone! It's a race till the very last minute that I'm at work." ;)

Okie so I have just started my monthly subscription of FASHION mag. (I also have a subscription of Elle Canada by complete default- thought it was Fashion- long story.) Anyways, so now that I get magazines delivered at home I dont feel the temptation to buy mags once in a while for about $5/magazine!!!<insane. My sister was one of those teenage girls who used to collect all her pocket money to buy magazines- literally. I was probably worse because I'd spend all my money buying bday cards for everyone I knew. Well since my birthday was in March, the first month of school, everyone remembered and so for the rest of the year I'd end up buying bday cards for everyone. Till today my cousins tease me about being stuck at Hallmark Cards the entire time when we had outings during the school term. Anyways, coming to the point- now that I have these magazines delivered I just cant seem to find the time to read the articles! Matter of fact as soon as I open these magazines I fall asleep. But then today I took to reading the articles and there was one called- HIP HERITAGE ~ Falling for the season's nostalgic mood, a writer discovers her mother's stylish past. <It's true I always wanted to grow up for the simple reason that I wanted to dress like my mum. I do now. I have inherited couple of her items. She has had to shorten couple of the skirts. And I have taken my obsession with Vintage handbags to new heights. We went to a party this weekend and it was so good to see her dress up ^__^> Thanks mum for having an awesome fashion sense and for never allowing me to wear eye shadow.I just wish you could have saved more of your stuff for me. Papa, thanks for being able to handle the 'cool uncle in his youth' picture tags.hehehe. Nostalgia totally hit me when I was attending my cousin's wedding and she had this slide show of her pictures from when she was born and our parents looked awesome! hehhe of course I cried and that is why I dont plan on getting married let alone make slide shows out of those tearjearking moments ;)

I'm in Love with the SUBLIME:

In aesthetics, the sublime (from the Latin sublīmis "sloping up to the lintel, uplifted, high, lofty, elevated, exalted") is the quality of greatness or vast magnitude, whether physical, moral, intellectual, metaphysical, aesthetic, spiritual or artistic. The term especially refers to a greatness with which nothing else can be compared and which is beyond all possibility of calculation, measurement or imitation.

The first known study of the sublime is ascribed to Longinus: Peri Hupsous/Hypsous or On the Sublime. This is thought to have been written in the 1st century AD though its origin and authorship are uncertain. For Longinus, the sublime is an adjective that describes great, elevated, or lofty thought or language, particularly in the context of rhetoric. As such, the sublime inspires awe and veneration, with greater persuasive powers.

Edmund Burke

Edmund Burke's concept of the sublime was developed in A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1756).^[2] Burke was the first philosopher to argue that the sublime and the beautiful are mutually exclusive. The dichotomy is not as simple as Dennis' opposition, but antithetical to the same degree as light and darkness. Beauty may be accentuated by light, but either intense light or darkness (the absence of light) is sublime to the degree that it can obliterate the sight of an object. The imagination is moved to awe and instilled with a degree of horror by what is "dark, uncertain, and confused."^[5] While the relationship of the sublime and the beautiful is one of mutual exclusiveness, either one can produce pleasure. The sublime may inspire horror, but one receives pleasure in knowing that the perception is a fiction.^[6]

Burke's concept of the sublime was an antithetical contrast to the classical notion of the aesthetic quality of beauty as the pleasurable experience described by Plato in several of his dialogues (Philebus, Ion, Hippias Major, and Symposium) and suggested ugliness as an aesthetic quality in its capacity to instill feelings of intense emotion, ultimately creating a pleasurable experience.^[7] Prior to Burke, the classical notion of the ugly, most notably related in the writings of Augustine of Hippo, had conceived it as lacking form and therefore as non-existent. Beauty was, for St. Augustine, the consequence of the benevolence and goodness of God's creation, and as a category had no opposite. The ugly, lacking any attributive value, was a formlessness in its absence of beauty.^[8] For Aristotle the function of art forms was to create pleasure, and had first pondered the problem of an object of art representing the ugly as producing "pain." Aristotle's detailed analysis of this problem involves his study of tragic literature and its paradoxical nature to be shocking as well as having poetic value.^[9]

Burke's treatise is also notable for focusing on the physiological effects for the sublime, in particular the dual emotional quality of fear and attraction noted by other writers. Burke described the sensation attributed to the sublime as a 'negative pain' which he called delight, and which is distinct from positive pleasure. Delight is taken to result from the removal of pain (caused by confronting the sublime object) and is supposedly more intense than positive pleasure.

Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo touched on aspects of the sublime in both nature and man in many of his poems (Poems of Victor Hugo). In his preface to Cromwell, he defined the sublime as a combination of the grotesque and beautiful as opposed to the classical ideal of perfection. He also dealt with how authors and artists could create the sublime through art. Both the Hunchback and Notre Dame Cathedral can be considered embodiments of the sublime as can many elements of Les Misérables.

<The experience of the sublime involves a self-forgetfulness where personal fear is replaced by a sense of well-being and security when confronted with an object exhibiting superior might, and is similar to the experience of the tragic. The "tragic consciousness" is the capacity to gain an exalted state of consciousness from the realization of the unavoidable suffering destined for all men and that there are oppositions in life that can never be resolved, most notably that of the "forgiving generosity of deity" subsumed to "inexorable fate".>

The killer whale (Orcinus orca), commonly referred to as the orca, and less commonly as the blackfish, is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. Killer whales are found in all oceans, from the frigid Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas. Killer whales as a species have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as sea lions, seals, walruses and even large whales. Killer whales are regarded as apex predators, lacking natural predators.

Killer whales are highly social; some populations are composed of matrilineal family groups which are the most stable of any animal species.^[3] Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviors, which are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations, have been described as manifestations of culture.^[4]

The IUCN currently assesses the orca's conservation status as data deficient because of the likelihood that one or more killer whale types are separate species. Some local populations are considered threatened or endangered due to prey depletion, habitat loss, pollution (by PCBs), capture for marine mammal parks, and conflicts with fisheries. In late 2005, the killer whales known as the "southern resident killer whales" were placed on the U.S. Endangered Species list.

Wild killer whales are not considered a threat to humans,^[5] although there have been cases of captives killing or injuring their handlers at marine theme parks. Killer whales feature strongly in the mythologies of indigenous cultures. In Western cultures, it has had a reputation for being a fearsome predator.

Common names

English-speaking scientists most often use the term killer whale,^[9] although the term orca is increasingly used. Killer whale advocates point out that it has a long heritage. Indeed, the genus name Orcinus means "of or belonging to the kingdom of the dead",^[9] or "belonging to Orcus." ^[10] Ancient Romans originally applied orca (plural orcae) to these animals, possibly borrowing it from the Greek ὄρυξ, which referred (among other things) to a whale species. Since the 1960s, orca has steadily grown in popularity; both names are now used. The term orca is preferred by some to avoid the negative connotations of "killer",^[11] and because the species is more closely related to dolphins than to whales.

They are sometimes referred to as blackfish, a name used for some whale species as well. Grampus is a former name for the species, but is now seldom used. This meaning of grampus should not be confused with the Grampus genus, whose only member is Risso's Dolphin.^[12]

1. My name is prolly the most mispronounced word~ Lisa, Risha, yasha, eysha, yes-ha, geisha, hey-sha, yi-sha, esha ...
~ its actually pronounced 'yay-sha'

2. My dad picked my name from a company that manufactured some part of machinery. I had never believed that story> how can anyone??? No one new what my name meant not him either. Until I met this other girl whose name was also Yesha and she told me it meant 'fame' and I confirmed it with google baby names. Couple of months ago I asked my dad again and I actually managed to track down the company!! It still exists and it is a capacitor manufacturing company that's been around the 1960s.

3. I have an undergrad degree in Architecture & Geography and I always believed I'd work for the goverment. Still do and I will. My current dream job is to work for CPPIB.

4. My entire life, I have always known what I want to do ; but things haven't always turned out the way I wanted. oh well. There are so many times when I wished my life was easier but in retrospect I know all the dramatic changes that I've had to go through all my life has let me 'live life'. My coping mechanism is in excellent condition.   

5. I live for serendipidous moments. I have had quite a few.

 

6. I have often had people tell me, "You are a workaholic..." and I am like, "ummm... I know" 

7. I have a collection of- American dimes, books, notebooks, earrings, pearl necklaces, vintage tea cups, vintage plates, vintage scarves, vintage bags and cardigans in almost every colour. Apart from that I couldn't care much for anything else.

^___^ I was having a discussion with one of my friends today about where we would like to live, how much can we afford, when we aim to buy.. etc. etc. hahahha she was like, "even if you get married, you still need to have your own place"- lolz.. okie.. my probable buy my own space year is 2013! ^__^

My Litte Nephew at 2 months! Went to meet him today at almost 8 months and he is so big already! kekeke Unfortunately I havent been visiting as often as I should... and its no wonder he started wailing everytime he saw me! gosh when I look at him grow I realize just how much time has passed! And I dont think I've done much in these 8 months between when he was born in Jan till this Aug.

** Well I received a promotion at work yesterday *wink*wink*..I shall save that story for later its 2316 and I have to be up in like.... 3 and a half hrs! Plus will upload his 8 month pics next week!

Today may be "just another day" for many of us, but for our friend, Joe, it will once again be a very special one. Like each and everyday from Sunday right through Saturday.

"Each day, in everyone's life, should be a special one," Joe says. "Never, ever call it an ordinary day. Make today the one when you dress smartly, comb your hair neatly, freshen up, and go out to meet new people, savour fresh ideas.

"Make it a day to do new things. To enjoy more time with your family, perhaps try to concentrate a litte less on work. A day to forget worries big and small. To sit in a garden, and savour the fresh air.

"Stop saying 'I would like to...' If a thing is worth doing, or seeing, or listening to, doesn't it deserve to be enjoyed this very day? Before the months have passed and it is too late."

Using Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor and work others' emotions. It is measured in EQ, which is the emotional equivalent of IQ.

Managing emotions: EI has two aspects: one inward facing and one outward facing. The first of these is your emotional self-awareness and your ability to manage your own emotions. The second is your degree of empathy, or awareness of others' emotions, and your ability to productively manage relationships with others. Both inward- and outward-facing aspects of emotional intelligence are made up of a number of skills or competencies.

The four competencies of Emotional Intelligence:

i) SELF-AWARENESS: emotional self-awareness; accurate self-assessment; self-confidence

ii) SELF-MANAGEMENT: emotional self-control; trustworthiness; conscientiousness; achievement orientation; adaptability; optimism; initiative

iii) SOCIAL AWARENESS: empathy; organizational awareness; service orientation

iv) RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: development of others; inspirational leadership; influence; communication; change catalyst; conflict management; bond building; teamwork and collaboration

Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans

   
 

 

The Saline Royale (Royal Saltworks) is a historical building at Arc-et-Senans in the department of Doubs, eastern France. It is next to the Forest of Chaux and about 35 kilometers from Besançon. The architect was Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736–1806), a prominent Parisian architect of the time. The work is an important example of an early Enlightenment project in which the architect based his design on a philosophy that favored arranging buildings according to a rational geometry and a hierarchical relation between the parts of the project.

The Institut Claude-Nicolas Ledoux has taken on the task of conservator and is managing the site as a monument. UNESCO added the "Salines Royales" to its List of World Heritage Sites in 1982.

Today, the site is mostly open to the public. It includes, in the building the coopers used, displays by the Ledoux Museum of other futuristic projects that were never built. Also, the salt production buildings house temporary exhibitions.

The second plan

Ledoux designed the semicircular complex to reflect a hierarchical organization of work. The complete plan included the building of an ideal city forming a perfect circle, like that of the sun. Louis XVI had signed the edict authorizing the construction of the saltworks on 29 April 1773, and after approval of Ledoux' second design, construction began in 1775. The city was never started, however. All that was completed was the diameter and a semicircle of buildings of the saltworks.

In the second design, the entrance building sits at the mid-point of the semicircle and contains on one side guardrooms and on the other a prison and a forge. Other buildings on the semicircle include on the left, as one faces the entrance, quarters for carpenters and laborers, and on the right, marshals and coopers. At the center of the circle is the house of the Director, which has a belvedere on top. A monumental staircase led to a chapel that was destroyed by fire in 1918, following a lightning strike. On either side of the Director's house are the saltworks themselves. These two buildings are 80 meters long, 28 meters wide, and 20 meters high. They contain the drying ovens, the heating pots, the "Sales des Bosses", and the salt stores. At each intersection of the diameter and the semicircle sit buildings that housed the works' clerks. Behind the Director's house there is an elegant, small stables for the Director's horses.

The support of salt works by a state monopoly probably explains why this building is so grand. The gabelle was very unpopular and was one of the complaints that led to the French Revolution. The Revolution itself probably curtailed the building of the ideal city.

****Well.. when I should have been catching up on some much needed sleep I ended up reading one of the books that I own but hadn't quite gotten myself around to reading it. In there was this quote describing Brooklyn Bridge...and I just had to get myself out of bed to have it logged. Architecture talk still makes me weak... ahh those undergrad years....
